8 Groundbreaking Insights from Sno Trac’s Mason McLeish on Snowcat Innovation

Picture this: gliding effortlessly over snowy terrains in a sleek snow vehicle that marries agility with affordability. Sounds like a dream? Welcome to the world of Sno Trac!

Sno Trac is revolutionizing the snow vehicle industry with its versatile, small snowcats — affectionately known as "pocket snowcats." These vehicles are not only affordable and easy to transport but are also proudly made in the USA, offering customization options to suit a variety of preferences.

In this blog, we dive deep into a conversation with Mason McLeish, the creative force and Production Manager at Sno Trac. Mason's journey from a robotics enthusiast to a key player in snowcat innovation is an exciting tale.

How Did Mason McLeish Start Working with Snow Vehicles?

Mason McLeish's path to snow vehicle engineering began with a passion for robotics in high school. "My first job out of school was with a CNC shop in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, where I designed and operated CNC equipment," Mason shares. This role laid the groundwork for his future in mechanical systems.

His transition to snow vehicle engineering was almost serendipitous, sparked by technical challenges at Sno Trac. "When I was brought in to develop a method to manufacture track guides, I quickly found myself fascinated with the Sno Trac prototype process. There was no going back," Mason recalls. His dedication to building the first 21 machines over five years marked the start of his career in designing specialized snow vehicles.

What Makes Sno Trac Unique Among Snowcats and Snowmobiles?

Sno Trac stands out in the snow vehicle market by offering smaller, more manageable snowcats compared to traditional, bulky models. "A typical snowcat can cost upwards of $200,000 to $500,000 and weigh up to 16,000lbs.," explains Mason. "Our Sno Trac models are much lighter, around 3,400lbs., and designed to be more affordable."

Sno Trac's design philosophy emphasizes simplicity and adaptability. "We’ve integrated a Kubota diesel engine and a hydrostatic drive system that improve control and maneuverability, making our vehicles suitable for various snow conditions," Mason adds.

Key Innovations in Sno Trac's Design

One significant advancement is the hydrostatic drive system, which allows for precise control over the vehicle's tracks, making it easier to handle steep and uneven terrains safely. "Adjustability and responsiveness are critical in snow conditions. We’ve continuously improved our systems to enhance these aspects," says Mason.

How Does Sno Trac Perform Under Different Snow Conditions?

Sno Trac is engineered to excel in various snow conditions, from deep powder to icy surfaces. The hydrostatic drive system ensures precise power distribution, adapting to changing surfaces for a smooth and safe ride.

Built with a robust steel frame, industrial hydraulics, and an aluminum body, Sno Trac vehicles are designed to withstand harsh winters and heavy usage with minimal maintenance; regular preventive measures include greasing of bogey wheels and routine fluid checks – that’s it!

When thinking of memorable moments that showed Sno Trac’s versatility, Mason shares memorable moments from field-testing: "One of our tests on a 32% grade hill with 4’ of snow proved the capability of our machines to handle steep ascents and various flat surfaces efficiently." This adaptability is crucial for users who need a vehicle that performs well in challenging climbs and more docile landscapes.

User Experience: What Do Customers Love About Sno Trac?

Customers frequently praise Sno Trac for its robustness and ease of use, even in challenging conditions. Mason recalls a memorable field-testing instance: "During our first winter of operation, we had a new hydraulic system and unexpectedly blew a seal on one of the pumps. Despite this, the team managed to backtrack down the trail, showcasing our vehicle’s resilience."

User feedback has led to significant design changes. "The need for more space inside led us to expand the cabin size without compromising agility. We're also working on adjustable steering to accommodate different terrains," Mason explains.

Inside the Innovation: Production and Culture at Sno Trac

At Sno Trac, the mood shifts wonderfully through the seasons. Winter brings excitement as the team tests and perfects their snowcats in the snow, while summer adds a unique twist as they build these winter machines under the sun. Despite occasional supply chain hurdles, the team stays efficient and adaptable all year round.

The integration of a full welding robot has transformed Sno Trac’s manufacturing process, enhancing capacity and precision. Nearly all components are sourced within the USA, supporting quality and community.

Mason McLeish is deeply involved in every design aspect of Sno Trac – that goes from initial sketches based on the original Aktiv Snow Trac machine to the final assembly. "Show me a piece, and I’ll tell you exactly where it fits," he remarks, highlighting his detailed understanding of each component.
